In the construction of manufacturing industries, two major obstacles confront Indonesia, which is external and internal based obstacles. The external obstacle is the ASEAN Community, while the internal obstacle is the internal preparedness of human resources.
“Specifically, Indonesia faces three internal obstacles, which is the highly competitive market, production quality, and efficient production processes,” stated Prof. Dr. Ir. Syamsul Bahri, M.Si., during his scientific oration for his professorial promotion in the field of Industrial Management, Faculty of Engineering Unhas, Monday (19/12) in the Senate Room, Universitas Hasanuddin, Tamalanrea Campus.
In his speech entitled “Obstacles of the Manufacturing Industries in South Sulawesi in the Global Competitive Era: Beyond TQM,” the 354th Professor of Unhas concluded that the implementation of the Total Quality Management (TQM) will succeed in increasing the organizational work of the company if only the values of the TQM is instilled in the organizational conducts, and implement in all organizational organs of the company, which includes the highest management position, all the way to the lowest element of the company.
“TQM values must be translated to a number of the company’s business strategies in strengthening their bargaining position,” stated the Professor that was born in Bone, 13 November 1961.
The Doctoral graduate of Unhas further concluded that the TQM is not sufficient based on the South Sulawesi economic objective condition, therefore the manufacturing industry must enter and be prepared to adapt to the national and global economic circumstances, as well as integrate the method of Supply Chain Management (SCM).
The integration of TQM, SCM, and institutional solidification of the people’s economy, stated the Unhas Professor that happens to also be the Head of the State Employee Coop (KPN), must be able to produce Indonesian industrial strategies that functions not only to strengthen the economy, but also unify the state functionally in the increase of people’s welfare.
Based on the result of the research, Syamsul Bahri stated that the implementation of the TQM did not in a direct manner influence the company’s performance. Major influence will take place towards the performance of the company if it is through intermediate variable, which is culture or competitive strategy. It could be interpreted that the implementation of the TQM will impact positively towards the fixation of a company’s performance if the TQM values are integrated in the organizational conducts implemented all over the organizational structures.
“Without this, the TQM will not have a positive influence towards the performance,” stated the husband of Dra. Hj. Ernawaty Perkesi.
He stated that many examples could be seen in organizations and companies that have stated to integrate their organizational conducts with certain Standard Quality Management (SQM), for example is the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Though eventually it did not influence immensely to the company’s performance.
“Such a matter is caused by the fact that the TQM is not cultured into the organizational conducts or company,” elaborated Syamsul Bahri in his scientific oration dedicated for his Professorial prmotion, which is headed by the Head of Academic Senate Unhas, Prof. Dr. H. M. Tahir Kasnawi, S.U., with those present including the Vice Rector II Prof. Dr. Syamsul Bachri, M.Si., Head of the Unhas Professor Board Prof. Dr. Ir. Three Responsibilities of a Professor
Each lecturer that has obtained their appointment letter to become a Professor must orate their scientific founding during their professorial promotion ceremony in the Academic Senate Unhas. A professor must embrace three major responsibilities or burdens.
“First is academic responsibility, Second is moral responsibility, Third is social responsibility,” stated the Head of Unhas Professor Board Prof. Dr. Ir. Abrar Saelng, S.H. M.Si., during the professorial promotion ceremony of Prof. Dr. Ir. H. Syamsul Bahri, M.Si, Monday (19/12).
Until now, stated Abrar Saleng, Unhas has 354 Professors that have orated their scientific founding as a prerequisite to attain their new status. Out of the 276 Professors still active, only 207 that have made their scientific oration.
“It is hoped for all Professors that have yet made their scientific orations, to do so soon,” he hoped.
