Unhas Holds a Public Dialogue on Mining with PT. Vale, Chancellor: Natural Resources for the Prosperity of the People.

Hasanuddin University sponsored a public discourse on the theme of “Controversy over the Extension of Vale Indonesia’s Mining Permit.” On Thursday (23 September), an offline event took place in the Senate Room on the second floor of the Rectorate Building on the Tamalanrea Campus in Makassar and was broadcast live on the Unhas YouTube account.

Present as presenters are:

Unhashed Chancellor (Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc.)
2. The Director General of Minerals and Coal of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, represented by the Director of Mineral and Coal Development, Dr. Ing. Tri Winarno, S. T. M. M.
Chief of the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources of South Sulawesi Province (Ir.H. Andi Bakti Haruni, C.E.S)
Professor of Natural Resources and Agrarian Law at Unhas (Prof. Dr. Ir. Abrar Saleng, S.H., M.H.)
5. Economics Professor Unhas (Prof. Dr. Marzuki, DEA)
6 Sociologists Have Not (Dr. Sawedi Muhammad, M.Sc.)

Prof. JJ, the Unhas Chancellor, began the event by stating that, in light of the extensive media coverage and controversy surrounding the existence of PT. Vale Indonesia, Hasanuddin University is obligated to hold a public discussion within an academic context and constructive-dialectic dialogue in order to find a solution that is acceptable to all parties for the future operation of PT. Indonesian Vale.

Professor JJ also talked about how Unhas, as a university, should deal with the opposition to PT. Vale from the community and the district and provincial governments.

“Unhas participates and this dialogue must be academically framed, so we aim to develop a generation capable of analyzing every problem in every decision-making process. Campuses must be rational and objective, so that they are not easily influenced by false information. Thus, today’s conference becomes an open forum for the discussion of several environmental and social facts, “said Professor JJ.

Prof. JJ made several proposals linked to the theme “Natural Resources for People’s Prosperity” based on facts and information that give rise to various inconsistencies and disagreements.

Prof. JJ made five recommendations, one of which was a particular study on the optimal proportion of state revenues (central, provincial, and district) from the mining sector. Various environmental damage, social and cultural conflicts are directly felt by the government in the mining area, but the contribution received from the mining sector is relatively small. Therefore, it is urgent to conduct conflict mapping around the mining area by involving the university in collaborative action research to identify real problems on the ground.

Representing the Governor of South Sulawesi, the Head of the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Province of South Sulawesi (Ir.H. Andi Bakti Haruni, C.E.S) was present to convey crucial points in the implementation of the contract work of PT. Vale Indonesia, including one issue of environmental pollution that remains in the public and environmentalists’ focus, reclamation of ex-mining land, and community development and empowerment (PPM).

At the same time, the Director General of Minerals and Coal, represented by Dr.Ir. Tri Winarno, S.T., M.T., issued the following statement: In his general presentation, the Director of Mineral and Coal Development went over PT. Vale Indonesia’s obligations under the work contract, including changes to the contract.

PT. Vale Indonesia has to help the government reduce carbon emissions by taking care of mining, factories in residential areas, and the environment in a responsible way.

The activity continued with presentations from resource individuals and conversations with present participants. As moderator, Supratman, S.S., M.Sc., Ph.D. (Head of Public Relations, Unhas) ensured that the public dialogue ran smoothly. (*/dhs).
