Hasanuddin University (Unhas) continues to strengthen the quality of its human resources by developing the academic capacity of its young lecturers. One such strategic step was the launch of the In-House Intensive English Training Program for Young Lecturers of Hasanuddin University, held at the Auditorium of the Unhas Language Center Service Unit on Tuesday (28 April).

The program was officially opened by the Unhas Rector as part of the institution’s commitment to accelerating the growth in the number of lecturers with doctoral qualifications, while also supporting the Unhas vision of becoming a World Class University.

A total of 44 young lecturers with master’s degrees are taking part in the program. The participants have been temporarily released from their teaching and administrative duties so that they can focus on intensive English training, particularly in preparation for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam.

In a welcoming address, Unhas Rector Prof. JJ said that a command of academic English is one of the main requirements for gaining admission to universities with a global reputation and accessing international scholarships, including through the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP) scheme.

According to the Rector, many young Unhas lecturers have strong academic capacity but still face challenges in meeting IELTS score requirements, which generally range from 6.5 to 7.0.

“This program reflects the university’s commitment to young lecturers, so that they have a greater opportunity to pursue doctoral studies abroad. We want them to focus on studying, improve their English, and be able to achieve IELTS scores above 6.5,” said the Rector.

The training is designed to be intensive and focused, strengthening four core academic English skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Participants are also equipped with strategies for taking the IELTS exam effectively, as well as the scientific communication skills needed in the global academic environment.

Through this program, Unhas aims to increase the number of young lecturers who obtain IELTS scores that meet the standards of international universities. The certificates can later be used as part of the administrative requirements when applying for scholarships and doctoral programs abroad.

The program is expected to accelerate the emergence of more young Unhas academics pursuing further studies at the world’s best universities. In the long term, this step will strengthen the research capacity, academic reputation, and global competitiveness of Unhas. (*/dhs)
