Faculty of Agriculture Established an International Conference entitled "The 2nd International Conference on Food Security and Sustainable Agricultural in the Tropics (IC-FSSAT) 2019". the second International Conference proposed a theme of "Developing and Improving Sustainable Agricultural Practices: An attempt to Achieve Food Security and to Mitigate Climate Crisis In The Tropics". The opening ceremony took part in Swiss-Bel Hotel, Makassar on Monday (02/09).
The event presented two keynote speakers, Dr. Ir. Kasdi Subagyono. M.Sc. (General Director of Forestry as a representative of the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs of Indonesia) and Mr. Guo – Jhong Moh (Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund).

There were also several invited speakers such as Peter Mc. Mahon (University of Sidney, Australia), Masahiro Mii (University of Chiba, Japan), Bustanul Arifin (Universitas Lampung, Indonesia), Ambo Ala (Universitas Hasanuddin, Indonesia), dan Silke Stober (University of Humboldt, Germany).
The International Conference on FSSAT 2019 was opened by Rector of Unhas, Prof. Dr. Dwia Aries Tina Pulubuhu, MA. In her opening speech, she hoped that this event can be a milestone to enhance the sustainable agricultural practices in order to achieve food security and climate change crisis in the tropics.
"of course we all hope that this conference can result in something useful for food security and climate change mitigation specifically in tropical regions. I believe that all attendances here will contribute an idea that can be used as a reference to do something positive and useful especially food security and sustainable agriculture,” said Prof. Dwia.
On the same occasion, Prof. Dr. Agr. Ir. Baharuddin, explained that the conference was a form of support from faculty of agriculture for Unhas to achieve World Class University (WCU) and as a downstream medium on the results of research that had been conducted.
"This event is one of the outputs of research and studies from lecturers and experts of the Faculty of Agriculture by presenting several stakeholders from several countries. We hope there will be new knowledge and ideas exchange that will be utilized. Basically, the ultimate goal of this conference is how research results from the Faculty of Agriculture can be published to the public," explained Prof. Baharuddin.
Ir. Rinaldi Sjahril, M.Agr.Ph.D as a head committee added that the conference is the second time conference after the first one was established in 2017. The conference gathered the experts from various agriculture fields and academic community together to discuss the food security issues and sustainable agriculture in tropical regions.
“There are more than 200 papers submitted. Almost 80% of the total papers are owned by Unhas, approximately 170 papers. Hopefully, we will submit it for indexed Scopus.” Said Rinaldi.
The event was attended by around 100 participants from lecturer and students of the Faculty of Agriculture. (*)
