The Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries at Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) met with SAKIGAKE Japan on August 19, 2026, to explore opportunities for developing cold chain systems to support fisheries in island communities. Held in the Dean’s Meeting Room, the discussion focused on the Spermonde Islands and the infrastructure, technologies, and operational approaches needed to improve the handling and distribution of fisheries products across the archipelagic region.
The meeting was attended by Prof. Dr. Mahatma Lanuru, S.T., M.Sc., Dean of the Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries; Prof. Dr. Mukti Zainuddin, S.Pi., M.Sc., Vice Dean for Partnerships, Research, Innovation, and Alumni; Dr. Syahrul, S.Pi., M.Si., Head of the Fisheries Product Technology Study Program; and faculty representatives responsible for partnership affairs
Cold chain infrastructure is particularly important for island communities, where distance, transportation constraints, and limited storage facilities can affect product quality and market access. More effective preservation and distribution systems could help reduce post-harvest losses while allowing fishing communities to retain more of the economic value of their catch.
The discussion opens possibilities for broader cooperation in developing technologies and systems adapted to the geographic conditions of the Spermonde Islands. By connecting international expertise with locally identified needs, the initiative could support more efficient fisheries value chains, reduce product losses, strengthen coastal livelihoods, and encourage more responsible use of marine resources.
