Universitas Hasanuddin, through the Faculty of Dentistry, invited an expert from Amsterdam, Dr. Marco N. Helder, Ph.D. in as a guest lecturer. He is a lecturer at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, VU Medical Center Amsterdam, Netherlands. The event took place at the Halima Dg. Sikati Hall, Dental and Oral Hospital (RSGM) of Unhas, Kandea campus, Makassar, on Thursday (20/02)
Dr. Marco delivered a topic entitled “Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine for Tissue Repair”. It discussed Adipose Stem Cell and Univision Lab 3D Printing, which VU Medical University in Amsterdam is currently developing.
Adipose Stem Cells (ASCs) are a type of mesenchyme stem cells that have the potential for differentiation in adipose tissue. These attractive and abundant stem-source cells are used to repair and treat damaged, acute, and chronic tissue.
“Adipose stem cells can be used in patients with valve conditions, trauma patients, or ocology patients. In recent years, ASC has become the focus of regenerative medicine because it has an important role in tissue regeneration engineering,” explained Dr. Marco.
Moreover, Dr. Marco also described the collaboration research with Unhas on the use of Adipose Stem cells combined with calcium phosphate to cover defects in gnato in patients’ cleft lip and palate.
Before delivering the topic, Dr. Marco followed the operation carried out in the operating room of RSGM Unhas for gnato-schizis patients (a congenital abnormality in which gaps in the lips or the ceiling formed) using a bong graph combined with stem cells.
The participants enthusiastically observed the presentation delivered by Dr. Marco. Many participants gave questions and their views about this material. There was also a question about VU Medical Center.
The guest lecture was attended by approximately 100 participants from dentistry faculty students and young doctors from the Unhas dental and mouth hospital and lasted until 12:00 pm.
