The Faculty of Animal Science of Hasanuddin University (Unhas) and the Barru Regency Government signed a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) for poverty alleviation in Barru Regency. The signing took place on Saturday, 3 January 2026, in Sepee Village, Barru District.

The cooperation adopts a technology package based on livestock and productive agriculture, with the main instruments being the ALOPE UNHAS-1 chicken, duck farming, and various other productive crops. The technology package will be introduced to households vulnerable to poverty as an effort to increase income and economic self-reliance.

The initiative was conceived by Barru Vice Regent Dr. Ir. Abustan A. Bintang, M.Si., in the capacity of Chair of the Barru Regency Regional Poverty Reduction Coordination Team (TKPKD), together with the Dean of the Unhas Faculty of Animal Science, Prof. Dr. Syahdar Baba. The program is designed to be sustainable so that beneficiary households can move from vulnerable economic conditions toward a more prosperous life.

The ALOPE UNHAS-1 chicken, which has been released by the Ministry of Agriculture as one of the nation’s superior native chicken strains, is tangible proof of Unhas’s commitment to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly the No Poverty goal, through research-based innovation.

Dean of the Unhas Faculty of Animal Science, Prof. Dr. Syahdar Baba said that the Faculty also encourages the Barru Regency Government to establish an ALOPE UNHAS-1 chicken breeding unit, so that Barru can hopefully become a region self-sufficient in chicken breeding stock.

In addition, the development of feed innovations made from local raw materials is also encouraged in order to lower production costs and increase the competitiveness of the chickens produced.

“Currently, construction of the breeding facility is still in progress, with an initial planned capacity of 500 day-old chicks (DOC) per week. DOC production is targeted to increase to 1,000 per week by September 2026,” explained Prof. Syahdar Baba.

Overall, the program targets increasing the income of about 150 households vulnerable to poverty in Barru Regency.

Head of the Barru Regency Agriculture Office, Ir. Ahmad, said that implementation of the program will be overseen by a special technical team prepared by the relevant agency.

Meanwhile, Head of the Livestock Division, Syahrir, S.Pt., stressed the importance of training for field facilitators so that the process of introducing technology to beneficiary households can run optimally. Syahrir warned that without proper standard operating procedures (SOP), the program’s results could fall short.(*/fpet/dhs)
