Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Hasanuddin University, Holds Workshop Series on Computational Science

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) held a workshop series on computational science (mathematics, physics, chemistry, and bioinformatics). The opening section was performed in a hybrid way (offline and online), on Wednesday (16/11). The event, which was divided into four sections, lasted for three days.

The first session was conducted on Wednesday (16/11) at 9.00 in the lecture theater of FMIPA UNHAS which was officially opened by the Vice Rector for Partnership, Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Business, Prof. Dr. Eng. Ir. Adi Maulana, S.T., M. Phil.

Also present were the Vice Chancellor for Bid, Planning, Development, and Finance (Prof. Subehan., S.Sc., M.Pharm.Sc., Ph.D., Apt), Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (Dr. Eng. Amiruddin, S. Si., M.Si.), the leadership, the head of the Quality Assurance Group, the Head of the Laboratory, the Head of the Study Program, and the academic community of FMIPA UNHAS.

The Vice Rector for Planning, Development and Finance, Prof. Subehan., S.Sc., M.Pharm.Sc., Ph.D., Apt, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (Dr. Eng. Amiruddin, S. Si ., M. Si), leaders, head of the Quality Assurance Group, Head of Laboratory, Head of Study Programs, and the academic community of FMIPA UNHAS were also present attending the event.

In his remarks Dr. Eng. Amiruddin, S.Si., M.Si, as the Dean of FMIPA UNHAS, said that this event was initially ideated by Prof. Tasrief and colleagues as the first workshop; that the output of this workshop is planned to produce book compiled from the presentations of the involved speakers.

Also, Dr. Eng. Amiruddin, S.Si., M.Si expressed his deep gratitude for parties who have succeeded implementing this event. He added that this shows the faculty’s strong desires to support UNHAS in realizing the internalization programs. Previously, guest lecture was conducted in collaboration with various foreign universities, one of which was the Faculty of Science, University of Malaya.

On the same occasion, Vice Rector for Planning, Development and Finance, Prof. Subehan., S.Sc., M.Pharm.Sc., Ph.D., Apt., explained that FMIPA is a very productive faculty equipped with quality human resources; it can be seen from the numbers of publications and activities carried out.

Prof. Widodo, S. Si., M. Si., Ph.D.Med.Sc., as Rector of Universitas Brawijaya said through his speech that UNHAS has experienced a very significant improvement. Even now, UNHAS has excelled Universitas Brawijaya that used to get higher than UNHAS.

Prof. Widodo explained “Being able to collaborate with UNHAS is a great chance for us to improve our publication numbers and qualities. Competing among universities should be no longer a good idea; collaborating through publication and activities are way better to be considered to do.

The first presentation session on the Workshop Series on Computational Science (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Bioinformatics) was provided by Ahmad Ridwan T. Nugraha, Ph.D., discussing the topic “Introduction to the Tight-Binding Approximation and its Computational Aspects”.

The second session was conducted on Thursday (17/11) at the Lecture theatre of FMIPA UNHAS with the material presentation by the Rector of Universitas Brawijaya (Prof. Widodo, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D.Med.Sc) on the topic of “Computational Biology / Bioinformatics”.

Whereas the speaker in the third session was Muhammad Abdul Kadir Martoprawiro, M.S., Ph.D., a lecturer in the Chemistry Department of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) presenting the topic of “Density Functional Theory and its Application in Chemistry”.

As for the fourth session, it will be held on Tuesday, November 22, at 13.00 in the Lecture Theatre of FMIPA UNHAS, with Prof. Sauro Succi, Ph.D., from the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia La Sapienza and Research Affiliate Physics Department of Harvard University as the speaker. They will discuss “Lattice Boltzmann Theory: From the Construction to Basic and Advanced Applications.”
