Hasanuddin University and the US Consulate General Establish a Forum on Environmental Issues and Press Conference with the Media in Makassar

Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) and the US Consulate General held two events on March 9 and 10, 2023. The first event was a seminar on “Best Practices in Mining.” The workshop presented Associate Professor Ian Lange (Director of the Mineral & Energy Economics Graduate Program and an Associate Professor at the Colorado School of Mines) and Ramy Harimanda, a Technical Director of Ormat Geothermal Indonesia, as speakers. Moreover, the event was moderated by Dr. Ilham Alimuddin, a senior lecturer from the Geology Department.  

As an introduction, Prof. Ian provided several main issues related to mining activities that affect the community environment. He said that Indonesia is one of the countries that is rich in natural resources from mining. The main point of the talk is how to minimize the impact of mining on the environment while mining activities can still be operated.

After giving an introduction, it was then continued with a discussion and question-and-answer session with the participants. The discussion was about efforts to strengthen the mining area’s environment to be managed sustainably. It also discussed several mining environmental issues in several regions in Indonesia.
