Three residents from the Orthodontic Residency Program, Faculty of Dentistry, Hasanuddin University (UNHAS), successfully completed a two-week international Sit-In Program at the Department of Orthodontics, China Medical University (CMU), Taiwan, held from 14–25 July, 2026. The program was designed to strengthen clinical competence, broaden academic perspectives, and foster international collaboration in orthodontic education.
The UNHAS delegation comprised drg. Ahmad Fauzi, drg. Michael Ivan Limanto, and drg. Zulfahmi Duwila, accompanied by drg. Nasyrah Hidayati, Sp.Ort., Subsp. DDPK(K), as the supervising consultant.The program officially commenced with a welcome session led by Prof. Kenko Jian-Hong Yu, Professor of Orthodontics at China Medical University and President of the Taiwan Association for Dental Science. During the orientation, participants were introduced to CMU’s educational system, hospital services, and clinical training framework within the Department of Orthodontics, providing a comprehensive overview of one of Taiwan’s leading academic dental institutions.
Throughout the program, participants attended scientific lectures, clinical discussions and observational sessions focusing on contemporary orthodontic diagnosis, treatment biomechanics and patient-centered clinical care. A major highlight was the introduction to Low Hysteresis (LH) Orthodontics, an orthodontic biomechanical concept widely practiced in Taiwan. Through lectures and direct clinical observation, participants gained valuable insights into the principles and clinical application of the LH Orthodontics system.
The delegation also conducted clinical observations within CMU’s Department of Orthodontics, where they observed patient management, interdisciplinary clinical workflows, electronic medical record systems, and the integration of advanced technologies into daily orthodontic practice. In addition, visits to a modern dental clinic and participation in a scientific workshop provided further exposure to innovations in contemporary dental healthcare and education.
Beyond academic activities, the program included a cultural immersion visit to the historic town of Lukang, offering participants an opportunity to experience Taiwan’s cultural heritage while strengthening professional relationships with CMU faculty members and staff. The warm hospitality extended by the university community reflected the strong spirit of international friendship and academic exchange. The Sit-In Program represents an important milestone in the internationalization of the Orthodontic Residency Program at UNHAS. By providing exposure to global best practices in orthodontic education and clinical care, the program supports the development of future orthodontic specialists equipped to contribute to evidence-based practice, research, and innovation.
UNHAS remains committed to expanding international academic partnerships that enhance education, research, and professional development. The knowledge and experience gained through this collaboration with China Medical University are expected to contribute to the continuous advancement of orthodontic education and patient care in Indonesia while strengthening institutional ties between the two universities . This program primarily contributes to SDG 4: Quality Education, particularly by providing residents with opportunities to gain international exposure, access new knowledge and clinical practices, and strengthen professional competencies through cross-border academic exchange. The program also supports SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by strengthening institutional collaboration between UNHAS and China Medical University and promoting international partnerships in higher education, professional development, and knowledge sharing.
