The academic community of Hasanuddin University held a ceremony to mark National Education Day 2026 as a moment to reaffirm its commitment to strengthening the role of higher education in national development. The flag ceremony was led by Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc., as ceremony leader, and took place at the Tamalanrea Campus, Makassar, on Saturday (2 May).

On this occasion, Prof. JJ read the address of the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, which reaffirmed the strategic position of education in responding to global challenges and the dynamics of changing times.

“Education is the heart of civilization, the space where reason is shaped, character is forged, and the nation’s future is at stake,” Prof. JJ quoted from the address delivered.

Amid digital disruption, environmental crises, and the development of artificial intelligence, education remains the most fundamental, strategic, and civilized solution for facing complex global challenges.

This year’s theme, “Strengthening Universal Participation to Realize Quality Education for All,” underscores the importance of collaboration among all elements of the nation in delivering an education system that is inclusive, adaptive, and of real benefit to society.

The transformation of higher education, the address continued, is directed at three main focuses: expanding inclusive access to education, strengthening collaboration to produce solutions, and developing research that has a real impact on society and industry.

During the ceremony, the Satyalencana Karya Satya medal was also awarded to lecturers and education staff in appreciation of their service.

The recipients comprised 28 people for 30 years of service, 28 people for 20 years of service, and 110 people for 10 years of service. The award recognizes their dedication, loyalty, and integrity in carrying out their duties.

In addition, endowment fund scholarships were given to 100 students to support greater access to education and its continuity. On the same occasion, Unhas lecturers also received awards under the Priority Research Downstreaming Program of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology for 2025 and 2026, in recognition of their contribution to promoting research that has an impact and is oriented to society’s needs.

The entire National Education Day 2026 ceremony proceeded in an orderly and smooth manner and forms part of the campus’s ongoing efforts to support the development of higher education that is high-quality, inclusive, and competitive. (*/mir)
