A New Era for Unhas: Focus on AI, Global Research, and Downstreaming Innovation

MAKASSAR – Hasanuddin University has entered a new chapter of institutional transformation with the inauguration of 21 new officials, marking stronger university governance under the latest leadership term, on Tuesday (7 July), at Baruga A.P. Pettarani, Unhas Tamalanrea Campus, Makassar.

The restructuring is part of a strategy to prepare Unhas for technological disruption, speed up the downstreaming of innovation, and expand global research networks and collaboration. One of the most notable changes is the increase in the number of vice rectors from four to five. The new structure reflects a broader university mandate in responding to increasingly complex challenges in higher education.

In addition, Unhas has established several new strategic units, including the Institute for Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence and the Executive Global Research Institute. The two institutes are expected to drive academic transformation, stronger research, and the internationalization of the university.

Unhas Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc stressed that the presence of an institute focused on digital transformation and artificial intelligence is a strategic step in facing changing times. AI is a new dimension that touches nearly every aspect of life, from education, health, and industry to public services.

“This technology will shape how we learn, work, conduct research, and serve the community. That is why Unhas must be both a player and a trendsetter, not merely follow developments,” said Rector Prof. JJ.

Through this transformation, Unhas aims to integrate artificial intelligence into its education, research, governance, and campus service ecosystem. The step is also a foundation for building a more modern, adaptive, and technology-based university.

Prof. JJ also stressed that institutional strengthening must be followed by greater real-world impact from research and innovation. In Prof. JJ’s view, the products created by the academic community must not stop at scientific publications or the laboratory, but must be transformed into solutions that add value for society.

“Research results must reach the downstream. The innovations we create must contribute to the welfare of society, drive economic growth, and answer the real problems faced by the nation,” Prof. JJ said.

To support this agenda, Unhas is also strengthening the functions of the Vice Rector for Partnerships, Internationalization, and Alumni Affairs and the Vice Rector for Innovation and Business Management. The two portfolios are expected to speed up collaboration with government, industry, the business sector, alumni, and international partners in order to broaden the use of the university’s research and innovation results.

This institutional transformation is part of Hasanuddin University’s broader vision of building a university that adapts to developments in science and technology.

Through more dynamic governance, stronger global research, the use of artificial intelligence, and the downstreaming of innovation, Unhas affirms its commitment to being not only a center for developing knowledge but also a campus that delivers solutions, builds self-reliance, produces innovation, and makes a real contribution to the nation’s progress.
