SUNGGUMINASA – As part of the 70th Dies Natalis series of events of Hasanuddin University (Unhas), Unhas leaders made a pilgrimage to the Unhas family cemetery complex and to the tomb of Sultan Hasanuddin. The event began at 07:00 WITA (Central Indonesia Time) on Sunday (6 September 2026).

The event began with a pilgrimage to the Unhas family cemetery complex located in Patte’ne, Marusu District, Maros Regency. At this moment, Unhas leaders and the academic community remembered the figures, founders, lecturers, and education staff who devoted their lives to the advancement of Unhas.

Chair of the 70th Unhas Dies Natalis Committee, Prof. Dr. Ir. A. Mujetahid, S.Hut, MP., IPU, (who is also Dean of the Unhas Faculty of Forestry) explained that the grave pilgrimage is an annual tradition ahead of the Unhas Dies Natalis celebration.

“Although this is an annual activity, Unhas maintains this tradition so that we always remember the service and dedication of our predecessors, both lecturers and education staff,” said Prof. Mujetahid.

The pilgrimage then continued with a visit to the Tomb of Sultan Hasanuddin, located in the Gowa Kings’ Cemetery Complex, in Katangka Village, Somba Opu District, Gowa Regency.

Hasanuddin University Rector Prof. Dr. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc explained that the figure of Sultan Hasanuddin has an inherent meaning for Unhas, because the name of this largest campus in Eastern Indonesia was inspired by the name of the hero. The values of struggle and exemplary conduct passed down by Sultan Hasanuddin are a reminder for the sustainability of Hasanuddin University.

“I ask that we understand history not only to know about those who came before us, but also to remember and put into practice every deed and every action taken by our predecessors,” said Prof. JJ.

As a sign of seriousness, Prof. JJ urged the compilation of a book containing the complete history of Sultan Hasanuddin. The idea is ready to be carried out by Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Prof. Dr. Andi Muhammad Akhmar, who is prepared to facilitate the process of compiling the history book.

Prof. JJ further expressed hope that the effort would give the entire Unhas academic community, including lecturers and education staff, a better understanding of the history of Sultan Hasanuddin.

“As an institution that bears the name of Sultan Hasanuddin, Unhas has a responsibility to understand the history of Sultan Hasanuddin’s struggle more fully and in greater depth,” said Prof. JJ.

The pilgrimage closed with a communal prayer led by Prof. Dr. KH. Najamuddin A.S., Lc., MA (who is also an Unhas professor). The pilgrimage is an act of respect for those who came before, and a reminder that Unhas’s existence to this day is inseparable from the struggle, service, and sacrifice of many people. (*/ams)
