MAKASSAR– To strengthen the commercialization of research and technology development in the minerals sector, Hasanuddin University (Unhas) has formed a partnership with PT. Perusahaan Mineral Nasional (PERMINAS) Persero. The cooperation was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the Rector’s Meeting Room, 8th Floor of the Unhas Rectorate Building, Tamalanrea Campus, on Tuesday (16 June).

PERMINAS is a new state-owned enterprise, established in November 2025. The company operates in mineral mining and processing, focusing on managing strategic minerals such as gold, nickel, copper, and, specifically, rare earth minerals. Its capacity in downstream processing and mineral technology development is the basis for the collaboration with Unhas to strengthen research, innovation, and human resource development.

The MoU was signed by the Rector of Unhas, Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc., together with PERMINAS President Director Gilarsi W. Setijono. The event was also witnessed by the leadership of both institutions, including Unhas Vice Rector for Partnerships, Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Business, Prof. Dr. Eng. Adi Maulana, S.T., M.Phil., leaders of the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), and PERMINAS directors and commissioners.

Unhas Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc, explained that the cooperation is a strategic step in strengthening synergy between universities and industry, particularly in supporting the development of science, technology, and innovation, as well as building human resource capacity in the national minerals sector, especially strategic minerals.

“Unhas is committed to providing research-based solutions to various development challenges. The partnership with PERMINAS is expected to open wider space for collaboration in research, technology development, human resource capacity building, and the implementation of programs that bring real benefits to society and the strategic minerals industry,” said Prof JJ.

Meanwhile, PERMINAS President Director Gilarsi W. Setijono expressed appreciation for the cooperation with Unhas, one of Indonesia’s leading universities, with strong academic capacity and research resources.

“We believe that synergy between industry and universities is a key factor in driving innovation, technology development, and improving the human resource competencies needed to meet the minerals industry’s challenges in the future,” said Gilarsi.

This collaboration is expected to produce programs that not only support industry needs but also contribute to sustainable, value-added, and globally competitive management of mineral resources.

Unhas and PERMINAS agreed to explore various forms of cooperation covering education, research, community service, innovation and technology development, human resource capacity building, and other strategic programs that support the national development agenda.

In addition to the MoU signing, the event included a discussion session between Unhas and Perminas leaders to identify collaboration opportunities that can be promptly followed up through concrete and sustainable programs.(*/gie/aya)
