Unhas Graduation, Rector: Global Adaptation and Technology Mastery Are Key to Competitiveness

April 1, 2026 · 09:06 ·Humas Unhas

Hasanuddin University Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc. stressed the urgency of strengthening adaptive capacity, technological literacy, and a growth mindset as the main foundations of graduates’ readiness to respond to global transformation. The Rector said this directly to the April 2026 graduates.

Global transformation, marked by energy crises, geopolitical escalation, and technological disruption, has significantly changed economic structures and the job market. In this context, graduates face the need to have high adaptive capacity and the ability to read change as part of a sustainability strategy.

Prof. JJ stressed that technology mastery is the main determinant of competitiveness. The global paradigm shift shows that a nation’s strength is no longer determined by owning natural resources but by its capacity for innovation and mastery of technology.

“The workplace today needs not only technical workers but individuals who can learn quickly, think critically, and adapt in constantly changing situations,” explained Prof. JJ.

Along with these changes, industry needs have also shifted toward more adaptive competencies. The concept of learning agility has become crucial, namely an individual’s ability to learn quickly, adapt to new environments, and solve complex problems effectively.

Besides learning agility, Prof. JJ also stressed critical thinking as a foundation for facing an era of information disruption. Digital literacy is no longer limited to operational aspects but includes the ability to evaluate the validity of information and build data-based arguments. In terms of individual development, a growth mindset is positioned as a key factor in supporting successful adaptation.

“Digital literacy is not merely being able to use technology, but how you can think critically, sort information, and produce responsible solutions,” Prof. JJ added.

On this occasion, Prof. JJ also presented Unhas’s important achievements at the national and international levels, including recognition in global rankings, outstanding national academic performance, and various awards received by Unhas.

These achievements would not have been realized without the strengthening provided by Unhas’s three main organs, namely the Academic Senate, the Board of Trustees (MWA), and the Rectorate, as well as the support of the entire academic community, including lecturers, education staff, and students as the main pillars.

Closing the address, Prof. JJ expressed hope that graduates would not only survive but also turn challenges into opportunities for innovation. Every real contribution by graduates will be a driving force for solutions with a direct impact on community welfare, while also safeguarding Indonesia’s steps toward Golden Indonesia 2045. (*/mir)
