International collaboration in health and science has once again become a focus for strengthening Indonesian universities amid increasingly complex global challenges. Universities are expected not only to produce quality graduates but also to provide real solutions to development problems, particularly in an ever more dynamic health sector.

In this context, Hasanuddin University (Unhas) continues to expand its network of strategic partnerships with global institutions. One concrete step was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Fujita Health University (FHU) Japan, in an effort to strengthen cross-border academic and research collaboration.

The partnership marks an important milestone in promoting higher education development based on international collaboration, while opening space for exchanging knowledge, technology, and academic experience between the two institutions.

Unhas Rector Prof JJ stressed that the partnership is part of the institution’s strategy for responding to national development challenges. According to the Rector, the role of universities is crucial in strengthening the nation’s capacity through innovation and global partnerships.

“This collaboration is not just an academic partnership, but part of our effort to strengthen the real contribution of universities in meeting the nation’s needs, especially in the health sector,” Prof. JJ explained.

Prof JJ further explained that Unhas continues to develop various initiatives to support Indonesia’s development agenda, including contributing to the development of the Nusantara Capital City in Kalimantan. In this regard, international collaboration is seen as key to accelerating the transfer of relevant science and technology.

“Strengthening the health sector is currently a major challenge. We need outstanding human resources and an adaptive health system. This is why it is important to learn from global partners such as Japan,” Prof. JJ added.

Prof. JJ also regards Japan as a strategic partner with strengths in developing science and technology, particularly in health. Unhas sees great opportunities to adopt best practices and to drive joint innovation.

Through the MoU, the two parties agreed to develop various collaborative programs, ranging from exchanges of lecturers and researchers to students. In addition, opportunities to implement academic programs such as double degrees and to strengthen joint research are also on the strategic agenda ahead.

President of Fujita Health University, Prof Nakao Iwata, said that Fujita Health University has outstanding capacity in science and technology that is ready to be put to use in collaboration. Prof. Iwata stressed the importance of synergy between institutions in driving innovation with broad impact.

“We see great potential in this collaboration. By combining our strengths in research and technology, we are confident we can produce innovations that deliver real benefits to the global community,” Prof Iwata explained.

The MoU signing took place in the Rector’s Meeting Room on the 8th floor on Tuesday (5 May) and marked an important moment in strengthening the academic relationship between the two institutions. As a leading higher education institution in the health field, FHU is known as a large-scale center for research and medical services, supported by several teaching hospitals. (*/mir)
