MAKASSAR – Hasanuddin University (Unhas) and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) of the Republic of Indonesia are exploring stronger strategic collaboration in the development of new and renewable energy (EBT), sustainable energy technology, and human resource capacity building.

The Director General of New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Prof. Dr. Eng. Eniya Listiani Dewi, B.Eng., M.Eng., IPU., said Unhas has great potential to take part in various energy development programs, particularly in EBT and energy conversion. Future energy development is not only about technology but also touches many other aspects, from social and economic issues to metallurgy, recycling, critical minerals, and battery technology.

“Thank God, today I gave a public lecture and the students’ response was very good, so I feel inspired. There were several things we need to look at closely: social issues, economic issues, metallurgy related to recycling, then critical minerals, and also battery needs,” said Prof. Eniya.

Prof. Eniya also opened the possibility of stronger institutional cooperation between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and Unhas. One idea under consideration is establishing a representative office of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources on the Unhas campus.

“Going forward, I am sure there will be many collaborations. There may even be, something I am still thinking about, a representative office of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources at Unhas,” Prof. Eniya explained.

Prof. Eniya also appreciated Unhas’s commitment to developing the use of EBT on campus. Various campus facilities can be directed to use renewable energy sources combined with the green building concept.

“I also greatly appreciate the Rector for mentioning that the various buildings at this university can later use a combination of EBT sources and also apply the green building concept,” Prof. Eniya said.

Unhas Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc., said Unhas is ready to strengthen collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. He considers that EBT and energy efficiency must become part of university policy as well as of people’s lifestyles. Indonesia must rise, not only growing high and growing fast, but also growing green. New and renewable energy and energy efficiency must become part of Unhas’s lifestyle and policy.

“We have issued a Rector’s Regulation on the zero-emission target. One of its implementations is a policy on using electric vehicles for official vehicles. Starting this year, no official vehicles that use fossil fuel will be purchased; all must be electric vehicles,” said Prof. JJ.

Prof. JJ stressed that developing sustainable energy requires a cross-disciplinary approach. Besides metallurgy, economics, agriculture, animal husbandry, and marine science are also considered to play important roles.

The collaboration between Unhas and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is expected to grow in research, technology, EBT development, and human resource capacity building to support the agenda of energy transition and sustainable energy development.

The activity took place during the Unhas National Renewable Energy Forum (Sarasehan Nasional Energi Terbarukan) themed “Catalyzing the Potential of Multisector Green Energy: The Strategic Role of Hasanuddin University Toward the Nation’s Energy Self-Reliance” on Thursday (10 September 2026), at the Arsjad Rasjid Theater Lecture Room, Hasanuddin University, Makassar.(*/sr)
