MAKASSAR – Amid intensifying competition among universities in research, innovation, and student entrepreneurship, Hasanuddin University continues to strengthen its strategy for nurturing young talent so that it can compete at the national level. This commitment is being carried out by strengthening synergy among students, supervising lecturers, and university leadership as they face a range of academic achievement events in 2026.

For Unhas, national competitions are not merely annual contests but part of an effort to build a culture of scientific excellence that grows sustainably on campus. Well-directed mentoring is seen as an important foundation for me

MAKASSAR — Hasanuddin University (Unhas) is strengthening its student mentoring strategy for various national competitions in 2026. The step aims to maintain its tradition of achievement while strengthening a culture of research, innovation, and entrepreneurship on campus.

The commitment was affirmed at the Kick Off for the National Student Scientific Week (PIMNAS), the Student Entrepreneur Development Program (P2MW), and the 2026 National Mathematics and Natural Sciences Olympiad (ONMIPA), held at the Unhas Hotel and Convention Ballroom on Monday (25 May).

Unhas Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. drg. Muhammad Ruslin, M.Kes., Ph.D., Sp.BM(K), said Unhas is still able to maintain a competitive position in national events. In Prof. Ruslin’s view, strengthening student development and mentoring is the key to improving achievement.

“This year, 50 teams secured funding under the Student Creativity Program (PKM). We hope all teams will work harder and more consistently so that Unhas continues to be reckoned with nationally,” Prof. Ruslin said.

Prof. Ruslin said intensive mentoring is vital to improving the quality of proposals, presentation skills, and teams’ readiness for national competitions such as PIMNAS.

Meanwhile, Unhas Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc., is optimistic that Unhas can again achieve top results in national events next year. Prof. JJ praised the achievements of the students and supervising lecturers who have kept Unhas prominent nationally.

“Although we are currently in second place, the chance to become overall champion again is still very large. The number of teams does not always reflect quality,” said Prof. JJ.

In Prof. JJ’s view, a culture of scientific excellence must be maintained through a never-give-up spirit, innovation, and consistent student development. Prof. JJ stressed that Unhas’s participation in PIMNAS is not merely about carrying the campus’s name, but also about contributing to Indonesia.

The 39th PIMNAS is scheduled to take place at Diponegoro University, Semarang, on 2–7 November 2026, and is one of Unhas’s main targets.

Beyond research and innovation, Unhas also recorded a national achievement in the Student Entrepreneur Development Program (P2MW). This year, Unhas ranked first nationally. Of 104 teams that took part in internal selection, 18 teams submitted proposals at the national level and six proposals secured funding.

Prof. JJ said the achievement shows the growing entrepreneurial spirit among students. However, Prof. JJ stressed that the program’s main goal is not merely to secure funding but to produce young entrepreneurs who can build sustainable businesses.

In the academic field, six Unhas students also advanced to the national level of ONMIPA, which will take place at Airlangga University on 8–12 June 2026.

Through stronger mentoring and development, Unhas is optimistic that it can keep up its tradition of national achievement while producing outstanding students in research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. (*/rmd/mir)
