BULUKUMBA – Hasanuddin University (Unhas) is presenting 50 community service programs in Bulukumba Regency through the Unhas Community Service Programs Exhibition/Expo (PPMU).
The programs cover various fields, including agriculture, fisheries, marine affairs, education, health, and human resource development. The event serves as a venue to introduce Unhas’s research, technology, and expertise that can be applied to support the development of regional potential.
Unhas Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc., said the expo is part of efforts to realize the concept of an impactful campus by encouraging universities to be directly involved in regional development.
“This is a pilot project on how regions can function based on their respective potentials. Our potential is large and diverse, so there are many paths to downstreaming,” said Prof. JJ when opening the expo.
According to Prof. JJ, Bulukumba has great potential to develop an economy based on local resources, particularly through the marine, fisheries, and agriculture sectors. The region has strong potential to grow agro-industry.
Prof. JJ also asked that the village development programs carried out by Unhas in Bulukumba be sustainable. Support from the regional government is needed so that mentoring of villages does not stop once the community service programs end.
“We hope the government will support this. We will develop this together with Unhas, not just for this moment, but continuing onward,” said Prof. JJ.
In addition to community service programs, Unhas is also planning the development of higher education in Bulukumba through multicampus opportunities and research-based postgraduate programs tailored to regional needs.
“All of this is research-based. We also have plans for a multicampus and postgraduate programs in Bulukumba,” said Prof. JJ.
Bulukumba Regent Andi Muchtar Ali Yusuf welcomed the collaboration and appreciated Unhas’s contribution in providing studies to support the development of various sectors in the region.
“We appreciate Unhas’s role in providing studies for the development of various sectors,” said Andi Muchtar.
Andi Muchtar said regional development needs to be directed at strengthening the community’s economy. In the regent’s view, increased economic activity will strengthen the region’s ability to support other sectors, including education and health.
The Bulukumba Regency Government is also encouraging productive use of land through the development of various crops and commodities of economic value. The development of the agriculture, livestock, fisheries, and marine sectors is considered to have opportunities to be strengthened through collaboration with Unhas.
Andi Muchtar added that improving the quality of human resources needs to go hand in hand with regional economic development. For this reason, the Bulukumba Regency Government is opening space for cooperation with Unhas in various fields, including agriculture, livestock, fisheries, marine affairs, education, and health.
The 50 programs exhibited at the PPMU Expo illustrate the breadth of Unhas’s fields of expertise that can be collaborated on with government and communities. The programs are expected not to stop at community service activities but to be developed, replicated, and directed toward downstreaming according to regional needs and potential.
The Unhas PPMU Exhibition/Expo was opened on Monday, 31 August 2026, in Bulukumba Regency, South Sulawesi. (*dhs)
