The Faculty of Nursing at Hasanuddin University is hosting the Indonesia Japan SDGs Summer Program: Advancing Global Nursing Perspectives, a collaborative inbound program with Niigata University of Health and Welfare, Okayama University, and Kanazawa University.

The program is designed to strengthen global nursing perspectives based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The opening was held at 09:30 WITA (Central Indonesia Time) in the Senate Room of the Faculty of Nursing, Unhas Tamalanrea Campus, Makassar, on Monday (2 March).

Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs of the Unhas Faculty of Nursing, Syahrul Said, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kes., Ph.D., said that this collaboration is not merely a strengthening of the inbound program, but a strategic step in building a productive and sustainable international academic atmosphere.

Cross-border partnerships open space for knowledge exchange, cross-cultural experience, and joint research opportunities that improve the quality of learning and students’ global competitiveness.

Syahrul stressed the importance of developing joint research with the three partner universities as a foundation for long-term collaboration in nursing.

“The stronger our collaboration becomes, not only inbound or outbound, the more it opens opportunities for students to gain international experience and for the academic atmosphere to be strengthened as one of the strategic outcomes,” explained Syahrul.

On the partners’ side, Fusayo Kobayashi of Niigata University of Health and Welfare expressed appreciation for the welcome and the academic interaction built during the program. Kobayashi assessed that direct engagement with Unhas students and lecturers creates constructive scientific dialogue and strengthens the foundation of institutional cooperation in the future.

The program was officially opened by Head of the Unhas International Affairs Office, Andi Masyitha Irwan, S.Kep., Ns., MAN., Ph.D. In the remarks, Masyitha stressed that Unhas has diverse faculties and fields of study with potential for collaboration through broader and more integrated international schemes. Masyitha encouraged similar programs to be expanded to the doctoral level to strengthen research collaboration and reputable scientific publications.

“Through active international activities, participants gain not only academic experience but also cross-cultural learning that enriches their global perspectives,” explained Masyitha.

The program, scheduled to run through Tuesday (17 March), features a series of academic and clinical activities, including visits to a teaching hospital, community health centers, a psychiatric hospital, and a wound care clinic.

Students also take part in class sit-ins for the courses Palliative Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, Community Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, and Maternity Nursing to gain a comprehensive picture of nursing practice in Indonesia.

The Japanese delegation consists of five students from Okayama University, two students from Kanazawa University, and three lecturers from Niigata University of Health and Welfare. Their presence enriches the dynamics of cross-cultural scientific discussion while expanding professional networks in global nursing.

Through the Indonesia Japan SDGs Summer Program, the Unhas Faculty of Nursing affirms its strategic commitment to building international collaboration oriented toward strengthening academic capacity, collaborative research, and developing nurse competencies that are adaptive to global health challenges.
