A visiting professor from Guangdong Ocean University, China, Prof. Xuefeng Wang, delivered a lecture in the Restoration and Rehabilitation of Marine Resources course for Master’s Degree students in Marine Science at the Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries (FIKP), Hasanuddin University (UNHAS), on Monday, 4 May 2026.

On this occasion, Prof. Wang presented a lecture titled “Scientific Paradigm of Stock Enhancement in China”, aimed at enriching students’ understanding of the concepts and implementation of restocking, stock enhancement, and sea ranching in sustainable marine resource management, using case studies from China.

During the session, Prof. Wang explained that these approaches are key strategies for enhancing fishery stock while maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems amid pressures from overexploitation and environmental change. Stock enhancement is carried out by introducing hatchery-produced fish into the natural environment to increase population levels, allowing them to be sustainably harvested in the future.

The session was highly interactive, with one of the graduate students raising a question regarding methods for determining suitable locations for stock enhancement activities. In response, Prof. Wang explained that site selection involves several important stages, including historical analysis, collection of government data, and fieldwork observations. These data are then analyzed and integrated by researchers to generate appropriate recommendations.

Furthermore, Prof. Wang highlighted that prior to release, fish undergo an acclimatization process in the natural environment using fish aggregating devices (FADs). During this stage, feeding is gradually reduced to enable the fish to adapt and develop the ability to forage independently in the wild.

Through this activity, students are expected to gain a comprehensive understanding of stock enhancement concepts and be able to apply them within the context of sustainable marine resource management in Indonesia.
