Unhas Qualifies 21 Teams for PIMNAS 2019, Ranks Fifth Nationally

July 31, 2019 · 00:00 ·Andi Ihzan
Hasanuddin University (Unhas) has qualified 21 Student Creativity Program (PKM) teams to compete in the 32nd National Student Scientific Week (PIMNAS), scheduled for late August 2019. Udayana University in Bali will host Indonesia’s largest and most prestigious student creativity event.

The 21 teams Unhas has qualified are noteworthy in their own right. It means that over the past three years, the number of Unhas teams reaching PIMNAS has jumped significantly. In 2017, Unhas qualified 13 teams, while in 2018, 16 teams made it through.

“This year, Unhas actually had 71 PKM proposals funded by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemristekdikti). We rank seventh nationally in terms of the number of funded proposals. Thank God, 21 of those proposals have made it through to PIMNAS,” said Prof. Dr. drg. A. Arsunan, M.Kes, Vice Rector for Student Affairs and Alumni.

PIMNAS is the most prestigious reasoning and creativity competition among Indonesian university students. The Unhas Student Affairs division runs a series of structured and systematic programs to support students’ participation in the annual event.

Prof. Arsunan explained that students’ involvement in creative work receives close personal attention. At Unhas, students are given the widest possible room for creativity and are encouraged to conceive and produce creative, innovative and reliable ideas.

“We maximize the mentoring provided by supervising lecturers. We set up a Pokja, or PKM working group, for each activity. So we accompany students from the theme-selection stage through to proposal writing, via a coaching clinic. It doesn’t stop there: we also carry out internal monitoring and evaluation up to three times,” explained Prof. Arsunan, who is known for a prolific scientific output.

Having put these internal measures in place, Unhas also rewards teams that achieve success. In 2018, Unhas won gold and silver medals. Both the student teams and their supervisors received rewards from the university in recognition of bringing honor to the Unhas name.

“Let us pray that Unhas wins as many medals as possible at this year’s PIMNAS,” said the professor of public health, who has authored 14 Scopus-indexed articles.

Ten Faculties and Six Schemes

The Unhas PKM teams that qualified to compete at PIMNAS 2019 come from 10 faculties. The Faculty of Engineering qualified five teams, followed by the Faculty of Forestry and the Faculty of Dentistry with three teams each. Meanwhile, three faculties — the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (ISIPOL), the Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries — qualified two teams each.

Four other faculties — the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MIPA), the Faculty of Animal Science, the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Medicine — qualified one team each.

By PKM category or scheme, Unhas qualified teams in six schemes, with the following number of teams in each:

PKM Karsa Cipta (Technology Creation, PKM-KC): 8 teams;
PKM Research (PKM-P): 5 teams;
PKM Community Service (PKM-M): 3 teams;
PKM Social Sciences and Humanities Research (PKM-SH): 3 teams;
