Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries (FIKP) Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) welcomed a visit from two postgraduate students from James Cook University (JCU), Satrio Supoyo and Austin, who introduced Applied Coral Restoration and Innovation Science (Acoris) and its ongoing activities in Australia. The visit was received by the Dean of FIKP UNHAS and the Head of the Department of Marine Science on 5 May 2026 as an initial step toward establishing international collaboration between students from James Cook University and UNHAS, particularly in learning coral reef restoration techniques.
During the meeting, both parties discussed future perspectives and opportunities for collaborative programs that may be proposed for international funding schemes. Acoris is currently organizing a series of talk shows on coral reefs in Australia, and in the near future, scientists from UNHAS are expected to participate as speakers in the online discussion series.
The discussion also covered plans for a student workshop on coral identification (Coral ID) as part of efforts to strengthen student capacity building and academic exchange in coral reef conservation and restoration. The initiative is expected to enhance international academic networking while expanding students’ scientific competencies in marine ecosystem conservation.
As part of the visit, the delegates also met with the Head and Secretary of the Department of Marine Science at FIKP UNHAS. The visit continued to the Coral Center, where they conducted a socialization session and discussion on the condition of coral reefs in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) and the role of Acoris in supporting coral reef conservation efforts. The session was attended by around 10 student researchers at the Coral Center Laboratory and featured interactive discussions and knowledge exchange on coral reef research in Indonesia and Australia.
