The Faculty of Dentistry (FKG), Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) welcomed a delegation of faculty members and students from Kunhitharuvai Memorial Charitable Trust (KMCT) Dental College, India, for a six-day inbound student exchange program aimed at promoting academic collaboration, cultural understanding, and international exposure in dental education.
The delegation was led by Prof. Dr. Ranjith, BDS., MDS, accompanied by six dental students: Fathma Muhammad Aboobacker, Sadheeda Hamza, Sarangi Santhosh, Aleena Thomas Kannamplavil, Elizabeth Sneha, and Fathima Rageena. Throughout their stay in Makassar, the participants engaged in a series of academic, clinical, and cultural activities organized by the Faculty of Dentistry UNHAS.
The official program commenced on May 18, 2026, with an Opening Ceremony attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, UNHAS, faculty members, and representatives from both institutions. The ceremony marked the beginning of a collaborative learning experience between students and academics from Indonesia and India.
Following the opening session, the delegation attended an orientation program introducing UNHAS and its internationalization initiatives. The session was delivered by Andi Masyitha Irwan, S.Kep, Ns, Ph.D as Head of the International Office (IO), who provided an UNHAS overview, student life, and Indonesian cultural values. In the afternoon, the visiting students participated in a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with clinical dental students, creating opportunities for academic exchange, discussion of educational experiences, and intercultural interaction.
On 19 May 2026, Prof. Dr. Ranjith delivered a Guest Lecture attended by clinical students and residents from several specialist training programs (PPDGS), including the Prosthodontics Specialist Program. During the lecture, Prof. Ranjith shared valuable insights into contemporary dental practice and specialist education, encouraging participants to adopt evidence-based and patient-centered approaches in clinical care.
The academic session was followed by a Dental Hospital Visit to the UNHAS Dental Hospital (RSGMP UNHAS). The delegation toured various clinical departments and specialty clinics, gaining firsthand exposure to the hospital’s facilities and patient management systems. The visit included observation of the operating theatre, where participants learned about surgical procedures and multidisciplinary treatment planning. A case discussion session was also conducted between students and faculty members from both institutions, facilitating the exchange of clinical perspectives and experiences in managing complex dental cases.
On 20 May 2026, the delegation joined a Suturing Workshop organized by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The hands-on training introduced participants to fundamental suturing techniques and surgical principles commonly applied in oral surgical procedures. The workshop provided valuable practical experience and strengthened participants’ clinical skills.
The final academic activity took place on 21 May 2026, when the visiting students attended a Rubber Dam Workshop organized by the Department of Conservative Dentistry. Through demonstrations and practical exercises, participants learned the importance of rubber dam isolation in restorative and endodontic procedures, as well as techniques to improve treatment efficiency and patient safety.
The program concluded on 21 May 2026, with a Closing Ceremony. The event was attended by the Vice Rector of UNHAS, representatives from IO, faculty members, and participants from both institutions. The closing ceremony served as a celebration of the successful academic and cultural exchange program and highlighted the strong partnership between UNHAS and KMCT Dental College.
One of the highlights of the ceremony was a series of cultural performances presented by students from both universities. The participants showcased traditional songs, dances, and cultural presentations that reflected the rich heritage of Indonesia and India. These performances fostered mutual understanding, friendship, and appreciation of cultural diversity, creating a memorable conclusion to the international exchange program.
During the ceremony, representatives from both institutions expressed their appreciation for the collaboration and emphasized the importance of continuing international partnerships in education, research, and student mobility. The event ended with the exchange of souvenirs, group photographs, and farewell remarks, marking the successful completion of the six-day exchange program.
Throughout the program, students from both institutions actively exchanged knowledge, experiences, and cultural perspectives. The activities not only enhanced participants’ academic and clinical competencies but also strengthened friendships and professional networks across borders.
The successful implementation of the exchange program reflects the shared commitment of UNHAS and KMCT Dental College to fostering international collaboration in dental education, research, and professional development.
