The Dean of Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries (FIKP) Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) received an invitation from Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas to attend a discussion on the development of the seaweed research and innovation ecosystem in South Sulawesi on 4 May 2026 at the Center of Excellence for Seaweed Development and Utilization UNHAS. The activity is part of a strategic initiative to accelerate the development of Eastern Indonesia through the establishment of the Innovation Hub for Eastern Indonesia initiated by Bappenas.
The program is supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) Australia and the KONEKSI Program as part of strengthening international collaboration in research, innovation, and sustainable development in Indonesia. This support represents an important step toward advancing the internationalization of research and development in the marine and fisheries sector, particularly in the seaweed commodity, which holds significant potential for coastal economic growth and community welfare improvement.
The discussion was conducted together with the Center of Excellence for Seaweed Development and Utilization UNHAS to discuss readiness, current conditions, and collaboration opportunities in developing the seaweed research and innovation ecosystem in South Sulawesi. In addition, the activity marked the initial stage in preparing a roadmap for seaweed ecosystem development, which will serve as one of the pilot projects under the implementation of the 2025–2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN).
Through its active involvement in this initiative, FIKP UNHAS is expected to strengthen its role as a strategic partner in national and international marine research and innovation development, while also expanding global collaboration networks to support sustainable development in Eastern Indonesia.
