The Faculty of Marine Sciences and Fisheries (FIKP) at Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) hosted the 13th National and 9th International Symposium on Marine and Fisheries (SYMARFISH) 2026 on Saturday, 20 June 2026. With the theme “Science-driven Innovation in the Blue Economy: Achieving Food Security and the SDGs,” this symposium served as a platform for academics, researchers, government officials, and industry stakeholders to share research findings and strengthen collaboration in support of sustainable management of marine and fisheries resources.
The event was attended by more than 120 participants, with approximately 90 scientific abstracts presented. The presence of participants from various countries reflects the expanding network of international cooperation and further strengthens the position of FIKP at UNHAS as one of the region’s centers for the advancement of marine and fisheries sciences.
In his remarks, the Rector of UNHAS, Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc., emphasized the importance of science-based collaboration and innovation in optimizing the potential of Indonesia’s marine resources to support sustainable development and food security.
SYMARFISH 2026 features keynote speakers Prof. Zainul Arifin (National Research and Innovation Agency, Indonesia), Prof. Dr. Bayram Ozturk (Istanbul University, Turkey), Prof. Dr. Lim Phaik Eem (University of Malaya, Malaysia), Prof. Xuefeng Wang, Ph.D. (Guangdong Ocean University, China), and Prof. Dr. Ir. Nadiarti Nurdin Kadir, M.Sc. (UNHAS, Indonesia). In addition to the plenary sessions, the event also featured parallel presentations that provided researchers with an opportunity to present their research findings and expand their collaborative networks.
Through the SYMARFISH conference, which has been held for more than a decade, FIKP UNHAS continues to demonstrate its commitment to promoting scientific advancement, technological innovation, and international cooperation in support of the blue economy, food security, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
