About the Program
The Urology Study Program at Universitas Hasanuddin excels in the diagnosis and management of urinary stones, a common condition in South Sulawesi, which lies in a so-called stone belt zone. Records from Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital, a regional referral hospital, show 1,975 urinary stone cases from 2015 to 2019, not counting cases treated at other hospitals in Makassar that serve as the program’s satellite hospitals. This caseload creates opportunities to advance knowledge through research and to improve care, especially for urinary stone disease.
Strengths
The program’s main teaching hospital, Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital in Makassar, is accredited A and meets national and international standards. Residents also train at satellite hospitals including Universitas Hasanuddin Hospital, Ibnu Sina Hospital, Akademis Hospital, Faisal Hospital and Bhayangkara Hospital, all equipped with support facilities such as air-conditioned on-call rooms with computers, printers and Wi-Fi.
Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital provides a comfortable, healthy environment and a good academic atmosphere for specialist training. The program is particularly strong in the management of urinary stones and in kidney transplantation.
Areas of Specialization
Urology has become one of the leading choices for prospective specialists, as demand for urologists grows along with the spread of minimally invasive surgery.
Learning Process
- Teaching takes place in the classroom and at the teaching hospital and its network. To complete the modules, procedures and operations may be performed at network hospitals that have agreements with the program.
- Literature reviews and case reports may be presented at national and international scientific meetings on behalf of Universitas Hasanuddin.
- The final research project is expected to produce quality academic work publishable in reputable journals.
Career Prospects
Graduates are encouraged to work in regions that still lack urologists, to help reduce inequality in access to urological care.
