About the Program
The Pediatric Surgery Study Program at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Hasanuddin, takes medical education to a more specific level, deepening theory, skills and professional conduct in surgical procedures for infants and children through apprenticeship, while strengthening clinical service and research. It is a formal, structured and staged program run by the Faculty of Medicine.
Strengths
The program’s flagship is comprehensive management of congenital and acquired colorectal disorders in children, grounded in science and biomolecular research. Over the past five years, colorectal disorders such as anorectal malformations, Hirschsprung’s disease and anal fistulas have been the most common cases treated at Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital, the Faculty’s main teaching hospital and a regional referral hospital. Pediatric colorectal disorders are also high-risk, resource-intensive and prone to serious complications.
Areas of Specialization
Areas of focus include pediatric digestive surgery, neonatal surgery, pediatric urology, pediatric surgical oncology, pediatric endolaparoscopic surgery, and pediatric emergency and trauma surgery.
Learning Process
Teaching keeps pace with current advances in pediatric surgery, the quality demands of hospital care and the National Standards for Higher Education. Neonatal surgery and advanced equipment for congenital anomalies, liver transplantation and the separation of conjoined twins have all shaped the field, as have minimally invasive techniques such as pediatric laparoscopy, endolaparoscopy and robotic surgery. Besides developing their surgical skills, residents complete a thesis.
Career Prospects
Graduates become pediatric surgeons who can work as clinicians, in hospital management or in research.
