About the Program
Specialist training in pediatrics in Indonesia grew out of the wider development of the medical profession. Pediatrics in Makassar began when Dr. Ch. J.V.A. Makaliwey was assigned to the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Hasanuddin, in 1960. The Pediatric Specialist Education Program was then approved by the Directorate General of Higher Education in 1980 (decree No. 076/U/1980), allowing the Department of Pediatrics to begin formal teaching. The program was accredited B by the Indonesian College of Pediatrics in 2011 (decree No. 15/Kep/kolegium-IKA/IV/2011) and, after reaccreditation in 2017, accredited A by LAM-PTKes.
The program aims to produce pediatricians with the academic and professional competence to care for healthy and sick children, in families and in the community, from conception to the end of adolescence; who can absorb, develop and share knowledge; and who uphold medical ethics. Graduates must be able to address problems where they work, keep up with rapid change in medical education, technology and the sociology of medicine, especially in pediatrics, and anticipate its consequences. The curriculum is therefore evaluated and revised regularly.
The first-level specialist program (PPDS 1) in Pediatrics follows the Faculty of Medicine’s education guidelines and the curriculum of the Indonesian College of Pediatrics. Residents must master basic as well as specialist competencies and choose the approach best suited to each health problem and to the funds and facilities available, while keeping up with scientific advances. This is achieved through high professionalism and evidence-based medicine in every pediatric case, in line with medical ethics. Pediatricians serve not only as clinicians but also as researchers and educators, and the program works deliberately to develop both roles.

Academic competence is developed through:
